What Is Cupping Therapy?

Cupping therapy is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice that uses cups on the skin to create suction. It dates back over 2,000 years. In recent years, it has gained more attention because world-class athletes use it for injury relief.

Practitioners typically use cups made of bamboo, glass or earthenware.

How Does Cupping Work?

The suction may help increase blood flow and support healing. However, researchers still do not fully understand how cupping affects the body.

For example, a study published in PLOS ONE concluded that cupping could help relieve pain and disability associated with chronic neck pain and chronic low-back pain in the short term.

Is Cupping Safe?

Cupping is generally safe for healthy people when one of our trained health professionals performs the treatment. However, some people may experience side effects, such as bruising and soreness.

Is Cupping Right for You?

To find out whether cupping suits your needs, ask your physiotherapist how it might help you.

Cupping can serve as an alternative treatment for some people. Before starting treatment, share your complete health history with your therapist. This information helps your therapist explain the potential benefits and side effects of cupping therapy. Together, you can determine whether this treatment suits your needs.
